Overcoming Adversity: How Defeat Helped Me Grow
We’ve all been there: rock bottom. In those moments, it’s hard to see how you’ll ever make it through—but you do. And sometimes, when life knocks you down, you get up stronger than ever. This month, we asked our multigenerational line-up to share a story of a time they experienced “failure”—be it personal or professional—and how that tough time made them a better version of themselves.
Team 20s: Meggie Gates is a comedian and writer living in Chicago, IL. Their work has appeared in Consequence of Sound, Bitch Media, and the Chicago Reader. Their feet have appeared on Wikipedia.
Team 30s: Anna Suzuki is a Japanese-Jewish actor, writer, and comedian originally from Shizuoka, Japan (home of Mt. Fuji), now based in Brooklyn. TV credits include New Amsterdam, She's Gotta Have it, High Maintenance, and many more. Anna is the co-creator of AzN PoP!, a satirical Asian pop group, which performs sold out shows across the U.S.
Team 40s: Adalena Kavanagh is a writer living in Brooklyn. She has stories and interviews published in Believer Magazine, Electric Literature and The Literary Review, and just completed a novel.
Team 50s: Liz Warner spent years in Los Angeles in alternative radio on Indie103 FM before returning to NYC to anchor morning news for iHeart; she delivers daily newscasts for several different radio stations up and down the east coast. She's the author of two books and debuted her one-woman show The Wandering Eye at HBO’s Aspen Comedy Festival.
Team 60s: Barbara Bloemink is a theater and film actor. Formerly she was Director and Chief Curator for five art museums including the Smithsonian National Design Museum and the Guggenheim-Hermitage Museum. She’s organized exhibitions internationally and written numerous books.
Team 70s: Jennifer Munro is the recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s prestigious Circle of Excellence Award. She tells original, witty stories that celebrate the frailty and courage of the human condition, has produced three award-winning CDs and published a collection of short stories, Aunty Lily and other Delightfully Perverse Stories.
